Frequently Asked Questions

How is a dry loop Line installed (Dry ADSL, SDSL, IDSL, Fractional or Full T1)?
-When you place an order with us for a dry line, we first order a loop from the ILEC (Incumbent Local Exchange Carrier). The ILEC will send the order to engineering that will form a loop from the CO (central Office) to your location. The ILEC will use existing cooper in your area and via splice points, create a loop to your location. Note the ILEC will NOT install new copper wires. If they do not have any clean copper they will report back to us with "no Facilities", in which case we will contact you. Once the ILEC delivers the loop to your location, they will call us to test the loop. We will make sure the loop meets our qualifications, and we will either accept, or reject the loop.

If we accept the loop, we will then schedule one of our field technicians to come out to your location for the final install appointment. The field tech will bring the loop from the phone box (NID, or DeMarc) into the room or location of the building you would like the DSL equipment installed at using existing inside wiring. If you do not have any available inside wiring, please have new wire run before our technician arrives. The Field tech will configure the CPE (DSL Equipment), and via their laptop, test the connection for an active Internet connection. Once completed, you will be up and running.

If our technician arrives, and finds no available inside wiring, they will test the connection at the NID or DeMarc, Verify our end of the connection works, and then leave the CPE with you to perform your own inside wiring.

Why can I get DSL service through other ISP's, but not through Lightning Bolt? (or Vice Versa)
- The biggest thing to remember is all ISP's are different companies. They offer different services, and different coverage area's. Just because one ISP can offer you a given service, does not mean all ISP's can.

Common reasons:
- Different coverage area's
- Different services, make sure you are comparing apples to apples.

A good analogy would be this: You can go to McDonald's, and order a Big Mac. But can you go to Burger King and get the same Big Mac? Of course not, but you can get a Whopper. Both are hamburgers, but very different.

How do I test the speed of my connection?
- We are in the process of creating speed test at many locations around the United States. Currently one test is up in a beta stage, and can be viewed here. We hope to have Speed test available at all 17 of our Internet PoP's in the future.

I need a PPPoE software client
- If you are on one of our residential packages, and your CPE is a bridge, you will need to connect via PPPoE. Mac OS X, and Windows XP, have PPPoE clients built into the OS. If you are using another version of Windows, or Mac OS 9, or earlier, you will need to install a PPPoE client, in order to connect to our network. DSLReports.com has a good PPPoE support forum, and list of software available for free download.

Another option is to buy a simple broadband router that will handle the PPPoE connection for you.

What is "Safe Mode"?
- If an ADSL circuit has stability issues, we may place the line in "Safe Mode". The advantage of using Safe Mode is that provisioning parameters can be adjusted and the end user does not have to cancel or downgrade their service, in most cases.

Safe Mode changes the port provisioning from Fast Path or Interleave. This process lowers the maximum sync rate and makes the CPE (Modem/Router) sync with a stronger signal.

Changing provisioning from Fast Path to Interleave is a common troubleshooting technique that aids in stabilizing marginal lines by providing error checking. The disadvantage of "manually" provisioning from Fast Path to Interleave is that it adds an additional 32ms of latency. ** When using Safe Mode, the Interleave delay is 8ms, instead of 32ms.**

The following are safe mode sync rates for each package:

Speed Package

How do I access LBDSL's News Server?
-Point your news reader to news.lbdsl.net You do not need a username or password as your access is determined by your IP address. We allow each user 3 concurrent connections to our server.

I can not access the news server!
-
First, make sure your service includes news group access. This includes all ADSL SOHO, SDSL, IDSL, and T1 services. If you have a residential ADSL line, you do not have access to our news server, and you would need to upgrade your service.

Make sure you are connected via your LB DSL line. Because access is granted via IP address, you MUST be connecting to the news server from your DSL line. This means, if you are connected via our dial-up, or on another ISP's connection, you will not be able to access our server.

If you are still having a problem connecting to the news server, please send an e-mail to our support team, with your name, account #, and IP address you are trying to access our server from.

How much data transfer, and speed is included on the news servers?
-Currently, we do not limit the speed you can access our server. You will be able to connect as fast as your DSL connection will allow. However, we do limit the amount of data you can transfer on a monthly basis. Currently this is set at 10GB/month. We will be watching the server, and bandwidth load, along with user demand.

Please note, this data transfer applies ONLY to news server access, your DSL line itself, has no data transfer limits.

How do I set up E-mail accounts?
-If we have already set-up an E-mail account on our mail server, you can go here, to configure an E-mail client to access your mail. If you would like to add E-mail accounts, to your DSL service, please E-mail support, include your account #, your name, and E-mail user name, and password you would like.

How do I change a password for an E-mail account?
-At this time, only our support staff can reset E-mail passwords. You can call, or E-mail us, and we will take care of any changes you need. If you E-mail us, please include your account #, name, E-mail user name, and requested password.

I have an e-mail account with another provider, can I still use it?
-As long as the other provider gives you access, then yes, you can use it while connected with your LB DSL Account. We do not block any ports, such as port 25, for your outgoing SMTP access. Please note, that since you are using another provider, we can not offer any help in setting up your e-mail. You will need to contact that providers support department. But again, we do not block any ports, or prevent using other e-mail services on all of our packages.

I have a LBDSL.net email account and I'm able to receive mail, but having trouble sending.
- For security, we require POP3 before SMTP. What this means is you MUST check mail before you can send. This prevents spammers from using our mail server as a relay for their spam. We recommend setting your e-mail program to check for new mail every 10 minutes, this will keep you authorized on our mail server to send mail.

This issue will typically result in a "relaying denied" error

How does your spam, and virus filtration work, and what if any e-mail attachments are blocked?
- On our LBDSL.net, and LBTech.us domains we use a spam, and virus filtration system that filters emails before they hit our users' inbox. This allows our servers to work more efficiently, verses checking mail at every single inbox. This means there are no per user settings you need to set, or adjust. We have run many test, and have very few false positive on spam filtration. However if you do find a user who is unable to send you mail, they should receive a bounced back error message, please ask them to forward that to our support staff, and we may be able to adjust any spam filters that caught it.

When it comes to viruses, many are in the form of executable (.exe) files. For this reason the virus filtration will strip out the attachment, and send you a notice as to the reason. So you will be unable to receive .exe files if you are using our LBDSL.net or LBTech.us e-mail.

I have one or multiple Static IP's, How can I get reverse DNS set up?
- To have us set up reverse DNS resolution, you will need to enter your IP address in an A record in the DNS of the Domain name. Once this is completed, please send our support department an e-mail, with your name, account #, domain name and the IP address you want us to do the reverse DNS for. This will generally take 24-48 hours for us to complete.
**Note** We do not offer DNS hosting, you will need to provide this. There are many 3rd party providers that offer this service free of charge.

How do I claim a SLA credit?
- If you have reviewed the Service Level Agreement (SLA), and feel you are eligibale for a credit per the SLA, you may complete this form, and fax it to 248-726-7015 or email it to our billing department.

I would like to cancel/disconnect my DSL service
- As long as you are not currently under a contract agreement, you can cancel your DSL service at any time without penalty. Simply send our support department an email with your name, account number, the date you would like service disconnected, and a brief description on why you would like DSL service disconnected. We will respond to your request, and verify all the information you provided. Keep in mind, per the Terms of service, we do require 30 days written notice to disconnect service.

We are still adding many things to this site, if you have any suggestion, please let our support staff know.
